As a first generation Gambian-Sengalese American, there have been many instances where I lacked the support system and resources necessary to pursue my goals and dreams. Getting the opportunity to join the Girls Leading Our World Global Cohort was life changing.

Meet Fatimata
Fatimata’s mother grew up in a small Gambian village, where traditional gender roles limited access to education. Extended family members advised Fatimata to focus on marriage over education.
Fatimata was accepted to a boarding high school and begged her parents to let her have this opportunity. Although her parents could not drive, they used their limited funds to get a driver to transport her 6 hours to boarding school.
Her mother's sacrifices and belief in her potential inspired Fatimata to advocate for gender equality and to use her education and voice as an advocate for change inspiring her to join apply for WEN’s cohort.
